Social Listening

For this blog post assignment, I choose BMW. My reasoning behind this choice stems from my passion and enjoyment of these fine-performance machines. People have mixed reviews about the BMW brand. Some people love the brand for its luxury performance and sleek design, however, others may not be as impressed because of the reliability issues, along with high maintenance costs. Ultimately, the reviews depend on each individual's experience and preference for the car brand. For me, the performance and design of the car are more important to me than the reliability and maintenance cost. Maintenance costs dramatically go down when you do the maintenance yourself rather than paying everybody to do it for you.

BMW’s value proposition is to make people feel younger and faster when driving as well as give them control of the vehicles with an advanced design, comfortable and safe so that they drive with total comfort.

People's reactions to the new M2 being released aren’t the best and personally, the design is kind of ugly. A person with the account name @eng.maher.220 Said “The ugliest BMW ever made.” While I currently think that is true as well, my opinion might change. The thing is, the last series of BMWs they released were the G80 and G82 M3 and M4 which people didn’t think looked aesthetically pleasing at first. Now people are starting to love them a lot more. BMWs goal in this post is to promote the all-new BMW M2 being released currently.

On BMWs, post about the new BMW, M4 CLS, a guy by the name of @iamgentleking said “Wow what a fantastic car bmw much love.” BMW and I both commented back. BMW is marketing the M4 CLS to the public in this post.

A guy by the Instagram name @314._.d commented “Please BMW retire this design.” The goal of this post is to bring attention to the link in the BIO for the marketing of their 50th M anniversary BMW.

Each one of these posts has the intention of marketing and product of BMWs, such as the new M2, CLS M4, and 50th anniversary BMW. The design behind the new BMW M2 could be considered something remarkable because of how off-base it is from their previous designs. In regard to social media. I noticed a lot of replies to people's comments on their posts. Good and bad. This idea of engaging with the customer in a direct way helps with their marketing. As for the new M2 design, it is definitely presenting a challenge for the BMW brand because of the poor design however, the aspect of the design builds brand recognition by making them seem remarkable. Another thing I noticed was BMW's comments back on the positive customer posts. This is helping them engage the customers. A majority of their responses were to customers with positive comments. The negative comments got little attention except other haters. Given BMW's sales of these vehicles, BMW definitely succeeding in its marketing techniques. It is known that people aren’t too happy with the design of the newer BMWs however, trying to get one is difficult because the orders are so backed up.

If I was the brand manager I would keep commenting back on the positive posts just as they have been doing. What I would change is that I would also respond to the negative comments in a way that would give me constructive criticism so I can change my approach to please more customers.

This assignment taught me the value of engaging with customers to promote your brand. I also got a sense that in everything you do, there will always be haters putting your brand down. You can't spend too much time focusing on those people but learn from them. These engagements could give you perspective on how to change your approach in the future.
